Wow. What a day of riding. I don't think that I have been on a ride with such variety. After a team photo, we set out under gray skies, north toward San Francisco.

The riders assemble in one place for the first time.

We all check our bikes out for a last time before departure.

As we climbed onto the ridges outside the city, we rose above the mists and fog , offering views inland of the valley. We then descended into the dense fog along the Pacific coast, to the beach for a tradition of dipping a wheel into the Pacific Ocean (in anticipation of eventually doing the same in the Atlantic ).

The Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in mist.

We continued north, eventually, over the Golden Gate Bridge, and through the charming small towns bordering the bay. As we headed east, the landscape became progressively more brown and dry, in stark contrast to the lush greens at the start of the day.

73 miles into our 3800 mile trip, we are lodging in Vallejo for the night.
