Through the Vineyards of Pennsylvania

Updated: Feb 19, 2020

July 15 Day 44 96 miles

The route today followed the Lake Erie shore, along vineyards and farms, with occasional views of the lake. There were a few wine makers along the way, though none were open for tasting during those early hours of the day. We had a chance to stop for coffee in the morning and had one SAG stop at 50 miles. After that, it was one long ride into Buffalo. The approach from the south took us through a long stretch of depressed and decayed, now defunct industrial area. Between the heavier traffic and the widespread debris on these roads, we were grateful to get to the hotel.

We left Erie through a residential area reminiscent of a New England town.

The abundant vineyards and occasional wineries were picturesque. There was plenty of activity in the vineyards. It was too early to do a wine tasting. Maybe in upstate New York.

We enter New York mid-morning. We will be in New York most of this week.

A side trip brings us to a lovely lighthouse along the route.

We catch a glimpse of Buffalo from a distance.

We will have an hour of travel to reach Buffalo, after first catching sight of it. The roads deteriorated and we had increasing auto traffic as well as a 5 miniute wait at a rail line for this thing to gradually work its way past.

The were some bike paths on the way into the city, but most of our travel was on roadways.

Th interior of the city is a lot more pleasant than the approach.

Buffalo offers a nice mix of restaurants. Tonight we eat BBQ.
